4 global organizations fighting against respiratory diseases

Like us, there are many organizations in the US and around the world that are actively raising awareness and advocating respiratory wellness. They work together with private institutions and the government to ensure the public are awareness of basic health precautions. This post will focus on some of them.

Before we begin, it is important to point out that private organizations and communities need to take responsibility on matters regarding health. It is impractical to depend solely on the Department of Health and medical institutions to not just work on development of cures, but also advocating precautionary messages. Health is a public concern, and one sick person in a community can potentially impact others around him or her. Hence it is a shared responsibility.

World Health Organization

The main global body that deals with health affairs is the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO works on multiple fronts – raising awareness, medical research and medical aid. It works in close association with the United National and governments for this. For the matter of respiratory wellness, the institution called the Global Alliance against Chronic Respiratory Diseases (GARD) works in close association with the WHO on prevention and management.

International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung disease

The International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung disease is a global scientific body that is present in over 150 countries across the world. It’s mission is to conduct research, journalism and advocacy for lung diseases. They campaign in association with national institutions on multiple fronts, most recently a campaign against smoking. Like the WHO, this organization also works with the United Nations.

COPD Foundation

A Non-profit organization (NPO) based in Washington, the COPD foundation is more than an advocacy organization. They are a grassroots operator providing services to more than 15 million people in the USA who suffer from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD). They have a dedicated action center which can petition congress for taking actions, depending on participation. They also collect donations, which go towards ridding the US of this dangerous disease.

Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA)

The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) is a scientific organization that works specifically on the management and prevention of Asthma. They do this on two fronts – publishing works that provide strategic ways to prevent asthma, and the holding of the World Asthma Day, which is held globally and helps to mobilize people and gather support.

The good works done by these organizations have seen many positive results borne out of it. Let us hope that they are able to achieve even more!
